Fearsome Fairy Tales

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, January 13, 2013, In : Regular
Okay, so this week I've been looking at Fairy Stories in class and once again, I was the first to admit what I pushover I have always been for fairy tales.  When I was a child I absorbed them all, like a sponge soaking up water.

I don't know what it was about them that fired my imagination.  Hansel and Gretel terrified me - the thought of a parent deliberately leaving two children alone in the woods was more than I could imagine as a child, especially as I was much-loved by my parents.  Little...

Supernatural Supermarket - part 2

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, May 27, 2012, In : Ghosts
If you are looking for a spookier supermarket, you might want to try this one in Australia.

A packet of Roll ups appears to jump off the shelf, completely unaided, and sprawls across the floor.  There's no footage of any apparition or ghostly images, just this packet that moves by itself...

However, there is someone in the store while this is happening, so I suppose it is possible that it has been engineered - invisible fishing wire, for example.  Inexplicable events do occur and there have bee...

Poltergeist - 1982

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, April 1, 2012, In : Ghosts
I was thrilled to see golden oldie Poltergeist on the television this week. The story is straight-forward enough; a ghostly presence takes control of the house and the youngest child, Carol Ann, who was actually born in the house starts talking to people through the television set. Alas, her parents think she is playing until she starts yelling at the screen. More paranormal activity takes effect, and furniture starts moving of its own volition.

This culminates in Carol Ann's brother, ...

The Devil Inside - released UK cinemas 16/3/2012

Posted by Andrea Lake on Monday, March 5, 2012, In : Ghosts
This low budget exorcism horror recounts the story of a woman who tags along to a series of exorcisms to try to find out what went wrong with her own mother's exorcism, where three people were murdered.

This film isn't released in the UK until 16th March for cinema audiences, but it's one that I'm looking forward to.  Ghost stories, and those of possession speak to people who long for contact from "the other side".  Whatever your personal feelings are, if you are able to believe that possessio...

The Woman in Black - Review

Posted by Andrea Lake on Thursday, March 1, 2012, In : Ghosts
Wow!

It's not often that words fail me, but I'm going to try to do justice to this film, somehow!

Daniel Radcliffe plays a widowed lawyer who has been engaged to sell a house and he has been told that he has to complete all the paperwork in respect of that house.  He travels to a lonely village where he is most definitely persona non grata and the locals try to persuade him to leave.  Having been given the "don't fail speech" off his employer, Arthur Kipps resolves to do the job properly and vi...

The Woman in Black - at cinemas now!

Posted by Andrea Lake on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, In : Ghosts
This new film starring Daniel Radcliffe is something to really whet my appetite!

Billed as a drama/horror/thriller by imdb.com, I must admit, I am longing to see this particular film.  The production company is my old favourite Hammer Film Productions and it's fantastic to see that they're finally recarving their niche - no one creates those tense moments before the "jump" quite like Hammer do.  No - I'm not going to mention The Ring.  Not at all!

The two films are totally dissimilar!  The fact...

What a Week!

Posted by Andrea Lake on Saturday, February 18, 2012, In : Regular
Here's hoping the insanity dies down for a bit.

I guess I have been hooked by TWO new series to hit the UK TV scene!  I absolutely love Suits!  This has absolutely nothing to do with the supernatural, but it is brilliant.  It focuses on a minor criminal who was set up to do a drugs drop and instead finds his way to an interview for a law firm as an associate.  The premise is really good and both the associate and his mentor are extremely good looking.  There's even a sexy paralegal so your fel...
