So Many Movies, So Little Time...

Posted by Andrea Lake on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, In : Regular
Hi folks!

There seems to be an influx of supernatural cinema screenings on at the moment.  You have to wonder why they're not waiting until October, to take advantage of Halloween treats and the spooky season, but their loss is definitely our gain!

A friend of mine has already been to see many of the films currently on offer, a couple of them twice! So let's start with her favourite, Warm Bodies (2013).  This is your basic paranormal romance, sexing up zombies and giving them a similar status t...

Pale, Floppy Eared Carrot-Munchers

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, March 1, 2013, In : Regular
This week has been full of ups and downs...

One of my uncles died last month and I met up with his closest family (and some of mine too as it happens) at the funeral earlier today.  It was interesting to see their faces as they reiterated that they would see each other again and while I can understand why some people need religion: for many it's a crutch, something watching over us keeping us on the 'right path' or the fantasy story of 'happily in the ever after' - so that life has some meanin...

Books, Books, Books

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, February 15, 2013, In : Witch
Much as I love my kobo, I spent a few hours today picking out some new reading material - REAL BOOKS!

I managed to find a Charlaine Harris title that so far I've only read on my e-reader and I picked up half a dozen Darren Shan books from his 'Demonology' series.  I loved his Saga of Darren Shan so buying this set of books was a no-brainer for me and I daresay a full review of each will follow as soon as I have time to catch up!  Having worked a little on fairy tales at college this past month...

Wild Wintry Weather

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, February 8, 2013, In : Regular
I have spent a little time of late getting to grips with Frankenstein, both the literary version by Mary Shelley and the Kenneth Branagh film.

The wild landscapes described by Shelley are extremely vivid; majestic almost in their appointment.  One can almost see the craggy waves in the sea of ice in Shelley's novel and feel the same sense of peace looking out on that bleak scene.

Exotic landscapes are a feature of Gothic literature but the scenes depicted by Shelley are not so far removed fro...

A New Haven

Posted by Andrea Lake on Saturday, January 26, 2013, In : Regular
The final episode of Haven looms like a harbinger of doom, and I while I am looking forward to seeing what happens with the skinwalker and Audrey Parker, I am reluctant to say goodbye to this particular tv programme.  Fortunately, a new season has been promised (yay!) and we viewers have no idea what to expect when that rolls around at the end of this year.

The premise behind the show is that many residents of the town of Haven suffer from 'troubles' or rather are plagued by supernatural event...

Fearsome Fairy Tales

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, January 13, 2013, In : Regular
Okay, so this week I've been looking at Fairy Stories in class and once again, I was the first to admit what I pushover I have always been for fairy tales.  When I was a child I absorbed them all, like a sponge soaking up water.

I don't know what it was about them that fired my imagination.  Hansel and Gretel terrified me - the thought of a parent deliberately leaving two children alone in the woods was more than I could imagine as a child, especially as I was much-loved by my parents.  Little...

Demented on The Shambles

Posted by Andrea Lake on Monday, January 7, 2013, In : Regular
It is not every day that feature films are shot on your doorstep, but you will definitely want to keep your eyes peeled for Dementamania due out this year!

This bizarre movie is billed as a thriller and follows the experiences of an office worker who is caught up between his deranged fantasy world and real life, unable to tell the difference between them.

If anyone knows the York area, there is a tiny street called The Shambles which hails from the Tudor period and still exists very much in the...

Zombies Attack Lincoln University

Posted by Andrea Lake on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, In : Zombie
I never thought I would see signs of a zombie apocalypse at Lincoln  University, but this film has been a viral phenomenon and created a wealth of publicity for Lincoln Uni.

The young man who made this film, while failing to portray a believable character, still managed to create an engaging and admirable piece of film, drawing on popular media and culture in order to create the perfect environments for sharing his skills.

If I might give my dear friend "K" a piece of advice... Vampires!  Vam...

Zombie Apocalypse

Posted by Andrea Lake on Saturday, December 15, 2012, In : Zombie
I know I'm not the only one who has a poster on the fridge listing survival techniques in the event of a zombie apocalypse, and I know there is no likelihood of this happening; but sometimes I feel I am the only one who notices the zombies in every day life.  I was one myself last week!

I had a rotten cold/flu bug and I felt seriously under the weather, yet I tried to continue my every day routine.  I'm not sure that much actually sunk in last week at all!  I thought about myself shuffling aro...

A Tryst with a Sire

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, December 9, 2012, In : Vampire
This week's episode of Vampire Diaries held a twist that I did not see coming!

Caroline, who everyone assumes is the typical blonde bombshell is repeatedly underestimated, but she's the one who works out why Elena has altered so dramatically since she became a vampire.  It's all to do with the sire bond and once it was explained, even I was thinking, "Why didn't I consider that before?"

The result of the sire bond is that Elena now listens when Damon speaks, where before she was all about Ste...

New Grimm

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, December 2, 2012, In : Lycan
I always enjoyed receiving new books from my parents - they opened my imagination to new ideas and paths of learning; inspiring my literary choices for decades.  At 9 years old, my teacher asked me what my favourite type of story was.  Without shame or embarrassment, I told her that my favourite tales were fairy stories filled with handsome princes, beautiful princesses, evil witches' enchantments where everyone lived happily ever after.  Yes, I know that this says more about me, than it did ...

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Dir: Branagh)

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, November 25, 2012, In : Regular

I had not watched this particular film until recently.  I've been looking at Mary Shelley's book as part of my coursework and have been fascinated by the comparisons between the book and Shelley's own life.  The story of Frankenstein evolved from a bet between her, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron to come up with a scary story.  If reports are accurate, Byron was so terrified by Shelley's tale that he ran screaming from the room.  The book itself is written in a flowing style, making it ...

Dead Men Don't Walk

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, November 11, 2012, In : Zombie
I love The Walking Dead and I enjoyed watching season 4, although it seemed to me to be a little more gory than previous series', however, I might be recanting events through rose coloured glasses...  Anyway, I digress.

One of the things that has been prevalent in my household is the back of a computer chair in front of the television screen.  Yes, my darling OH has been obscuring my view of the telly while playing on the xbox!  Yes, I know, other gaming consoles exist, but in our house the xb...

Sometimes I Wish Life Had a Pause Button

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, November 11, 2012, In : Regular
It has been such a busy month for me.  Becoming a grandparent was probably my scariest moment and in spite of my best efforts my daughter refused to call her daughter Wednesday.  :(  Well, she was born on Halloween, so I thought it was appropriate!

For all the fear and worry, though, sometimes I wish that life had a pause button so I could appreciate those incredible moments for a few seconds or minutes longer.  I know that Adam Sandler didn't really use the remote control to his advantage in ...

Literature...

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, October 5, 2012, In : Regular
As many of you beautiful readers already know, I spend an awful lot of time with books in my hands and I have to believe that this is a good thing.

Books not only educate us, sometimes in a very sophisticated and underhand way, but they also allow us the facility to escape from a life which might be challenging, cruel, or even unfair.  What I do know is, we all have our cross to bear, sometimes it is ill health, sometimes it is poverty, sometimes it is dealing with a whole range of different p...

The Castle of Otranto - Horace Walpole

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, September 28, 2012, In : Regular
I recently came across The Castle of Otranto, written in 1764 by Horace Walpole.

This book is a classic piece of gothic literature, featuring a lot of the main themes, ghost-like apparitions, maidens in distress, a cruel overlord, churches and cloisters, exotic locations, contracts, rites, hidden birthrights and last but not least, a potential curse visited upon the next generation.

I absolutely loved this literary treasure.  In spite of the age of the book, it proved to be a very easy read and...

The Hunger Games

Posted by Andrea Lake on Thursday, August 30, 2012, In : Regular

I've had hold of the The Hunger Games book trilogy for a while now, but never had the opportunity to read them until recently.

A dear friend managed to pass me on her copies of the Fifty Shades and while Mr Grey certainly does have demons of his own to contend with, these are psychological rather than metaphysical in nature. I'm afraid the Fifty Shades books did not leave a long-lasting impression on me and a friend actually queried if I had read them right? That poses the question, “H...

Demonic Possession

Posted by Andrea Lake on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, In : Regular
I was talking with a dear friend of mine the other day about demonic possession, specifically that film... The Devil Inside (which you probably know my opinion of already, if you've been following my blogs for a while.)

Anyway, I got to thinking if there was a way to prove demonic possession existed, then I discovered something really strange on You Tube of all places.  This young girl is exhibiting very strange behaviour and frankly, I don't know how she managed to stay upright at the end of ...

Golden Oldies

Posted by Andrea Lake on Saturday, July 28, 2012, In : Regular
I was thinking about keeping the kids entertained over the summer holidays - which let's face it is a nightmare for most parents - and I had a brainwave...  Why not compile a shortlist of films to keep them occupied while dad is engaged on the housework or mum is on facebook?

There are so many good modern films, and the graphics are fantastic - way beyond much of what we had available when I was growing up.  Still, there have been some amazing films which might just keep your little ones enter...

Football Nightmares

Posted by Andrea Lake on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, In : Regular
Like most other pundits in the UK, I have been glued to the television over the past weeks hoping against hope that I would finally see England triumph in the Euro.

Although I saw flashes of brilliance, for instance Carroll's goal, these were few and far between for our particular team and Spain's dazzling display on pitch showed us just far short of the mark we really were.

I would say, thank goodness that nightmare is over for another 4 years, but we have the Olympics in a few short weeks, ...

Game of Thrones - Spoilers!!!

Posted by Andrea Lake on Monday, June 4, 2012, In : Zombie
This season has "throne" a lot at us.  Rob Stark pronounced King of the North, Joffrey pronounced a little bastard by pretty much all who know him.

Sansa Stark must have been filled with relief when Joffrey decided to wed another, but her first real discovery is that she is now alone in Kings Landing with no real friends, and no protection!  Sansa was offered an opportunity to escape Kings Landing by Sandor Clegane and I would like to think his offer was made in good faith.  He has come to the...

True Blood Season 5 Coming to the US 10th June

Posted by Andrea Lake on Saturday, June 2, 2012, In : Vampire
Anyone who "True"ly knows me knows how much I love this series and I am absolutely bummed that I don't live Stateside.  If I did, I would be enjoying the delights of Sookie, Eric, Bill and Alcide (not to mention Lafayette, Hoyt and Jason) that little bit sooner!

This series originally sprang from the works of Charlaine Harris who has written a whole series of books on "The Southern Vampire Mysteries".  The books are written from the first person viewpoint of Sookie Stackhouse, although Alan Ba...

The Talisman - Stephen King and Peter Straub

Posted by Andrea Lake on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, In : Regular
I have lost count of the number of times I have bought The Talisman in recent years.  I have loaned it out to friends various times and never once got it back!

This tale is extremely engaging.  Who wouldn't be totally horrified by the thought of a 12-year-old boy making his way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean on a cross-country journey, unaided by friends or family?  The prepubescent Jack Sawyer is desperate to find a cure for his cancer-riddled mother and slowly makes his way acr...

Truth Really Is Stranger Than Fiction…

Posted by Andrea Lake on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, In : Zombie
The subject of zombies has inundated movie theatres since the 1970s and remains a popular part of cult literature, wowing both television and movie audiences across the globe.

However, the first film of the genre is White Zombie, released in 1932, in which a young man turns to the dark arts in order to wrest the woman he loves from her fiancé, but turns her into a zombie slave instead with unexpected results.  More recent times have seen blood and gore fests, like the 1968 classic, Night ...

Once Upon a Time

Posted by Andrea Lake on Monday, May 28, 2012, In : Witch
Is anyone else watching this fantasy drama on Channel 5?

Created by the same writing team who dreamed up Tron and Lost, it's a cross over between a "real life" place called Storybrooke, Maine and a magical Enchanted Forest incorporating the scope and characters of fairy tales and stories.

Many of the events throughout the series appear to strongly echo the stories in many of our favourite fairy stories, with the aptly named town Mayor, Regina, strongly reminiscent of Snow White's evil witch of ...

Supernatural Supermarket - part 2

Posted by Andrea Lake on Sunday, May 27, 2012, In : Ghosts
If you are looking for a spookier supermarket, you might want to try this one in Australia.

A packet of Roll ups appears to jump off the shelf, completely unaided, and sprawls across the floor.  There's no footage of any apparition or ghostly images, just this packet that moves by itself...

However, there is someone in the store while this is happening, so I suppose it is possible that it has been engineered - invisible fishing wire, for example.  Inexplicable events do occur and there have bee...

Ain't No "Secret" Circle Any More...

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, May 25, 2012, In : Witch
I hate it when I'm proved right!

I knew John Blackwell was trouble right from day one, (okay, so I didn't!)  But after I realised that his breaking up of Cassie and Adam was more to do with John's own self-serving plans rather than any curse, I knew all was not what it seemed.  He has been playing with his own dark magic side since he returned to Chance Harbor.

In a way, I'm glad that Diana has plans to get out of Chance Harbor for a while.  However, her being a witch is going to cause problems...

Finally Caught Up With The Secret Circle

Posted by Andrea Lake on Friday, May 11, 2012, In : Witch
I am really loving The Secret Circle.  Cassie Blake is the beautiful and somewhat beleaguered heroine of the story who has been reunited with her father.  The thing is John Blackwell definitely appears to have his own agenda.  He has come between Cassie and her boyfriend Adam Conant, deliberately severing their intimate connection and stomping on anyone who gets in his way.

I certainly wasn't surprised that Cassie had a sister; and I was less surprised by who this turned out to be.  I must adm...

Nightmare on Elm Street 2010

Posted by Andrea Lake on Monday, April 30, 2012, In : Ghosts
I tend to shy away from remakes as a rule because they tend to compare poorly against their predecessors.  It appears that the majority of the fans of the first film are pretty loyal to this theme.

However, I do note something special in this particular film.  It was brought up to date with a video blog scene where the blogger falls asleep and has his face smashed into the camera…  It doesn’t add much, but it’s a clever touch!  One that Robert Englund himself might well have approv...

Well, it has been an incredible couple of weeks here at La Maison Supernatural Supermarket.  I've been quite lost without Sky, but as an apology we've been given the added incentive of six months' worth of movies.  I quite like the sound of that but with life so hectic I haven't had a minute to really enjoy much.

The only film I've managed to watch so far is Resident Evil: Afterlife which was pretty amazing!  Of course, being a fan of the games and genre is par for the course and the graphics ...

Grim Reaping - Anthony Lund

Posted by Andrea Lake on Thursday, April 26, 2012, In : Ghosts
I've just had my hands on this manuscript of new author, Anthony Lund.  This particular yarn features a plot to kill Death, also known as Grim Alfonso Reaper.  If you are familiar with the work of Terry Pratchett, then this book will definitely appeal to you, although this particular story is set between various places on earth as well as parts of Hell.  Grim has to uncover the truth about who is trying to kill him and also find a way to bring about his character restoration as well as bring ...

To fill in the gap left behind by my beloved television shows (currently Alcatraz and Grimm, with Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle) I've turned to Sky via the xbox.  Who is the genius behind this particular app?  Why didn't they do it sooner?  Anyway, I digress.  One of ...
