Wild Wintry Weather

I have spent a little time of late getting to grips with Frankenstein, both the literary version by Mary Shelley and the Kenneth Branagh film. 

The wild landscapes described by Shelley are extremely vivid; majestic almost in their appointment.  One can almost see the craggy waves in the sea of ice in Shelley's novel and feel the same sense of peace looking out on that bleak scene.

Exotic landscapes are a feature of Gothic literature but the scenes depicted by Shelley are not so far removed fro...

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Dir: Branagh)

I had not watched this particular film until recently.  I've been looking at Mary Shelley's book as part of my coursework and have been fascinated by the comparisons between the book and Shelley's own life.  The story of Frankenstein evolved from a bet between her, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron to come up with a scary story.  If reports are accurate, Byron was so terrified by Shelley's tale that he ran screaming from the room.  The book itself is written in a flowing style, making it ...

Why I Created This Website

I always had an unnatural draw towards the supernatural.  My mother was a medium and could sit a person down without knowing them and tell them their life story.  My first brush with the supernatural came at high school when I borrowed Bram Stoker's Dracula from the school library when I was 11 or 12.

I had only read about 50 pages and had terrified myself so much with my fertile imagination that I couldn't sleep.  My mother decided the best thing she could do was desensitise me to horror film...
